When: Wednesday, October 30th, 2019
Where: Cedarhome Elementary Library
Time: 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.
The students receiving additional support in reading through the Learning Assistance Program (LAP) have been working hard! This is something to celebrate!! Come join us on the morning of October 30th, 2019, in the library for muffins and beverages. For your enjoyment, some of our students will be performing. Students will be released to their classrooms at 10:10 a.m. Afterward there will be a LAP overview and opportunity for you to provide input on our Compact & Parent Involvement Policy. You will also receive ideas to help your children with reading at home!
Please, R.S.V. P. by October 23rd, 2019 so we can determine the needed amount of food to provide during this celebration.

New Learning Assistance Program (LAP) Coordinator
Welcome to the
Welcome to the 2019-2020
school year! I am delighted to be your new Learning Assistance Program (LAP) Coordinator
working with Jill Kline, Carrie Brown, and Luke Brown (para-educators) at Cedarhome
Elementary School. As you all know, Cindy Phillips retired last year and I have
very big shoes to fill as the new LAP Coordinator! She has graciously volunteered
hours upon hours this summer to train me. This new job is an exciting journey
for me and I can’t wait to meet you in September and start working with your
child.
Let me introduce myself. My
career began in the Stanwood-Camano School District in 1993 after graduating
from Western Washington University. I have had the privilege of teaching grades
Kindergarten through fourth grade and I can honestly say, reading has been my
favorite subject to teach over the many years of my career. My husband and I
enjoy living on five acres just outside of the Stanwood city limits. We are new
empty nesters this year since both our children have left home to attend
colleges. That being said, I have lots of time to pour into my new position and
set goals for helping you support your child at home.
My goal is to update this
blog every month with information to help you guide your child at home to
improve his/her reading strategies and skills. Please check back every month
for valuable information!

Spring is here!
Yippee!
Hooray!
I can feel it in the air! Do you hear the birds singing in the mornings? It's a wonderful feeling isn't it?! We can definitely feel the shift here at Cedarhome Elementary. Students are becoming a bit more antsy. They're talking about practices for their spring sports, and are excited to not have to bundle up in three layers to stay warm!
Thinking back when my two sons were young and in elementary school I remember the difficult time we had sometimes fitting it all in between 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on school nights. (Bedtime was 8:00 p.m. and yes, they needed that much sleep!) One would have baseball practice at Heritage Park, the other at Stanwood Middle School. Their dad could sometimes help with transportation, yet other days mom was on her own. On top of that, I'm a teacher! My first question was always " How much homework do you have today?" And I always wanted to make sure some reading was done as well.
You've worked all year to establish before and after school routines and schedules. During this busy time of year I recommend trying to stay as close to your already established schedules and expectations as much as possible. It's tough to do, but so important! Children thrive when they know what is expected of them and what to expect in a day or week. Especially with reading! For those students who struggle with reading, or "don't like to read", being allowed the opportunity to not have to read is like winning the lottery! But unfortunately there is no pay off like winning the lottery and the struggle becomes even more difficult.
So if something needs to be skipped because of busy spring sports schedules and activities, think about missing that night time T.V. show to get 20 minutes of reading in. If that doesn't work, maybe skip the morning cartoons? To quote Margaret Fuller (American Author) "Today a reader, tomorrow a leader."
